The confederal model of the EU is not particularly suitable in times of crisis, as the EU itself goes into crisis.

The recent management of vaccines at the EU level has fully shown the practical – managerial and geopolitical limits towards the USA, Russia and China, showing that all the problems come to a head sooner or later.

For example, the authorization of vaccines is double, first at a European level and then at a national level.  We also don’t have an EU vaccine, because the confederal model has left this impossible task to individual states. The number of vaccines distributed has fallen short of the numbers reserved and this has meant that many states have taken different positions, with some opening to other countries such as Russia. The relationship of the EU with the pharmaceutical companies does not appear to be effective.

On another subject, some Eastern European States express totally different positions on the question of certain rights compared to the Western European bloc.  Positions that cannot be tolerated because the values are incompatible.

With a federal structure this would not be possible as the basic rights-values pairing would not be negotiable.

On the question of the stability pact, destructive future conflicts between the individual states are already foreseen, typical of the confederal model and almost absent in a federal model.

I’ll stop here, but I could go on with numerous other themes.

However, one cannot fail to notice that confederalism is a problem that is coming to a head … A problem that needs a solution.
